Eye examinations are intended to prevent blindness or serious vision loss by using the most advanced equipment and
technology as well as giving you the clearest most comfortable vision. Clear, comfortable vision may be obtained
with the use of eyeglasses, contact lenses or possibly surgical correction. The Vision Wellness examination consists
of two or more parts:
Eye Wellness
The Eye Wellness portion is to evaluate and screen for eye diseases internally and externally, including but not
limited to the possible detection of:
-
Glaucoma (most common optic nerve disease leading to vision loss and blindness)
-
Cataract (clouding of the lens in the eye)
-
Macular Degeneration (leading cause of blindness in older adults)
-
Diabetes (may cause prescription fluctuations and retinal changes)
-
Retinal Holes/Tears/Detachments (physical damage to the retina)
-
High blood pressure (can cause narrowing of blood vessels, bleeding, or vascular changes)
-
Allergies (Allergic conjunctivitis)
-
Dry eyes
-
Eye infections as in conjunctivitis (pink eye)
-
Chronic lid disease
-
Neurological eye signs (such as Multiple Sclerosis)
-
Strokes or Tumors (may cause visual field defects or partial loss of vision)
If it is determined that you may have some type of medical disease, you may be scheduled for a medical evaluation
(more extensive testing and further medical evaluation) and/or appropriate referral (See Medical Examinations.)
The Vision Examination
During the Vision Examination, the Doctors evaluate:
-
Visual acuity (measurement of clarity of your vision)
-
Refractive error (need for prescription or changes in prescription)
-
Preliminary evaluation for surgical vision correction
-
Preliminary evaluation for contact lenses
If needed, this portion of the examination may require additional testing:
-
Color vision testing
-
Depth perception testing
-
Ocular muscle coordination and motility
-
Additional specific testing for vision changes (e.g. Topography/corneal mapping)
Depending on the findings of the examination, if needed the Doctor will discuss with you the need for further
medical evaluation.
The Vision Examination
Contact lens fittings are separate from Vision Wellness Examinations. For more information, see Contact Lenses.
